@Maltimore science *was* named for sci-hub, after all
@Maltimore
Elsevier is probably public enemy no 1 now in academia, besides the "old men" who have already made it, don't need to pay for their subscriptions and have a vested interest in allowing the gatekeeper model to persist as it artificially increases the "prestige" of the journals they submit to.
@Maltimore My old lab at NASA ran on Sci-Hub and #icanhazpdf. Buying access to just two papers would have blown our budget for two quarters.
@Maltimore And personal progress as well. I've been able to make better informed decisions about medical treatment with information I could only get through #SciHub. Obviously that wouldn't work for everyone but... how many random people are out there dreaming up cool projects that really *need* science data to come to fruition? How much can greater understanding of the science on ____ positively affect the everyday lives of people who accessed it out of curiosity?
@Maltimore i used it a ton in my thesis. We _probably_ have access to the journals, but it's soo confusing its just not worth figuring out
